Sunshine State Voting - Forest City Elementary

Alden Drackley • Feb 08, 2024

Today, the Seminole County Supervisor of Elections Office visited Forest City Elementary School to conduct the Florida Association for Media in Education (FAME) Sunshine State Young Readers Award (SSYRA) and Sunshine State Young Readers Award Jr. program (SSYRA Jr.) election. Over 300 ballots were cast as students were able to vote for their favorite Sunshine State book.

The SSYRA and SSYRA Jr program aims to encourage and develop not only a student’s interest in reading for pleasure, but to read books that are on, above, and below their reading level in order to improve reading fluency and comprehension. Ranging from Kindergarten to Eighth grade level books, students have the opportunity to vote on their favorite after reading three or more books in their respective grade lists.

As a statewide program, Supervisor of Elections Offices across the state visit the schools to conduct a real election for the students. Official ballots, voting booths, and tabulation machines are brought to introduce the topic of voting to the young students, and to also publicly demonstrate the safe, secure, and accurate nature of Florida’s elections.
